Guatemala - Day 5

Tomorrow, March 6, is Laurel's Birthday

Thursday - Day 5 - started out with a visit to the local school. Ed and Sheri, the owners of the house, have been very generous to the local school and visit the school to bring supplies. Ed told us that the school kids needed tennis shoes. So the girls all rounded up some shoes and a local store, Gazelle Sports, was very giving and donated over 30 pairs. On the trip down we brought five large suitcases full of our shoes and many books and stuffed animals from Ed, Sheri and their children Emma and Spencer.

Our experience at the school was very moving. We met with the administrators of the school and visited several classrooms - David and Anna helped with the language. The girls were able to hand out the books to the older children and the stuff animals to the young students. The school is a Christian school and the kids all wear uniforms. They were so appreciative and were amazed with the girls since they don't see many Americans. Make sure you ask the girls about the visit. I know they were quite moved. Many of the Guatemalan families make great financial sacrifice to have their children receive a K-12 education.
It was a beautiful sunny day, so the girls decided to stay at the house and enjoy the pool. Brenda and I headed to the market - about one hour away. It was a great experience and we have included some photos. Today all of us are going to the local town to hit some shops and have dinner.

Bea,

I always use spellcheck since I am a horrible speller. However when you log on to my blog in Guatemala, the spellcheck is only in Spanish. It is a problem...
