March 17th, 2009 was the 25th anniversary of our wedding day. To celebrate, Brenda and I stayed at the new Trump Hotel in Chicago. We had a 900 sq. ft. room overlooking the Wrigley Building, Tribune Building, Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Chicago has special meaning for us since we have wonderful memories of the city from our days at Kalamazoo College. During fall of our senior year, Brenda did an internship at the Chicago Institute of Arts. Over the years we have made many trips to the windy city, often with the kids. It was special to have some "us time" and enjoy all that Chicago offers.
We came to Chicago on Sunday the 15th and stayed until Tuesday the 17th. The sun shined all three days and on our anniversary day, it was 73 degrees. We even ate outside. The hotel was beautiful with an incredible attention to detail. Brenda's siblings sent us a fruit and cheese plate and the hotel sent a bottle of sparkling wine and chocolate covered strawberries (see the photos - they were beautiful). Keith and Lisa sent breakfast to our room and we enjoyed a couple great meals with Bryan and Jessie.
I have many things to be thankful for in my life and Brenda is at the top of the list. Getting married young (and poor) is never easy. Brenda's career plans changed over night and she went from Kalamazoo College student and future art historian, to being a loving mother and running a home. She has adjusted to many changes over the last 25 years and has always been supportive of me and has placed the needs of our four wonderful children ahead of her own. I am so proud of Bryan, Keith, Laurel and Philip and know that the foundation Brenda created in our home launched them in the right direction. She continues to be a source of strength and support for our kids (and two wonderful daughters in-law). While our first 25 years of marriage has been active with the kids, we did not lose focus on our relationship. I remember a quote from years ago that "the best thing a father can do for his kids is to love their mother".
Marriage is a journey and every day is a new adventure. I cannot imagine a more wonderful and truly beautiful person to hold my hand as we walk along life's path. Thank you Brenda for your love, friendship, and support. Here's to many more anniversaries!
