It is the 21st Century - Can't we have a real toilet?

When I first traveled to Europe in 1982, I was struck by the number of floor toilets (see pictures above). Well not much has changed in the last 27 years. Nearly every public bathroom I used in Italy during our last trip was still a hole in the floor. It was especially interesting to see a couple of recently renovated restrooms where a brand new "hole in the floor" was installed. No matter how many times I use this type of toilette, I just cannot find any advantages to it's design. If it would fit in my suitcase, I would love to introduce the Italians to a good, old fashioned American sit down toilet.

My favorite "toilet" moment from the last trip (2005) was when we were in some small museum in one of those Tuscan hill towns (I don't remember which one, but they were all the same anyway). I went to the bathroom and opened the door, and there was a woman standing there looking into one of the stalls. I started to apologize, because I thought I had gone into the wrong bathroom. However, she said something like "no, you are fine, this is the only bathroom." Sure enough, it was the only bathroom in the place, a public restroom with several stalls, for both men and women. And the toilets in each stall were "hole in the floor" type in dad's pictures, and there were no doors to any of the stalls! After a moment of hesitation, she just said "there is no way" and left. I tried to be quick in case anyone came in, and so that I wouldn't be left behind...
