Father's Day 2009

Many books have been written about the changing roles of fathers in our society. Over the last several generations, we have seen a substantial shift the role(s) of fathers. When I look at my extended family, my brothers and I have all taken a key role in the daily raising of our kids. We can even cook a meal and clean the toilet. While these were not roles of my Dad and of Brenda's Dad, nonetheless, our fathers are strong models of discipline, commitment and character. As our society tries to analyze "the crises of fatherhood", I sometimes think we forget these core values and the importance of passing them on to our own sons.

Discipline: Both of our Dads served in the military and had long working careers. As we face our current economic crises, I think back to how Al and JR had to provide for their families during the economic crises of the 1970s. It is difficult to wake up for work at 6:00 am every morning for 35 years. Our Dads had this discipline not for their own benefit, but to provide their families with a nice home, food and to give their children educational opportunities that they never had.

Commitment: Our Dads have been married to our Moms for a total of 115 years - enough said.

Character: Although we may not aways agree with our Dads, both Brenda and I know what they stand for and believe in. A strong belief in what is right and wrong is an invaluable trait that they passed along to their children.

We have been truly blessed to have our Dads in our lives for so many years. Here's to Al and JR! We love you!!
