In talking to my kids the last several weeks, I realized how they are all using their talents and skills to give back to others. Here is what they are currently doing:
Bryan, for his pro bono work, is helping a woman with an asylum case where she needs to remain in the U.S. Her abusive husband has threatened to kill her if she returns to Nepal.
Keith, as part of his medical school rotations, is helping the poorest of Houston and is seeing patients who have not been to a doctor in years.
Laurel is a hospice volunteer and visited with a couple this week. He has late stage Alzheimer's.
Philip is off to the state finals in forensics. Philip spends countless hours as a mentor and coach to the freshmen and sophomores on the team.
Jessie and Lisa work at schools where over 95% of the students are on the subsidized lunch program and come from very challenging home environments. They both have a passion for teaching and giving these kids a chance.
It is so satisfying as a parent to see your children use their skills to help others. Way to go guys!

To be fair, the "pro bono" comes out of the partners' pockets, not mine. I just get to enjoy taking a bigger role in a case than I normally would get to at this point. It's nothing but upside for me.
/maintaining my callous reputation
To be fair, I have to work with this population, because it happens to be where our required training/rotations take place. But it is a great experience, especially to see all of the accomplished physicians who choose to serve a disadvantaged population for their career.
I am helping pay the wages of factory workers in Mexico by buying a new 3-D television they made!
Okay, it doesn't sound as good as what other people are doing, but I do what I can!
